Window Styles

Window systems range from side-hinged, or casement, to fixed, or non-operational and each has a specific function in the design and uses of a building.

Performance Testing of Window Systems

Window systems fall into four basic performance classes; Residential (R), Commercial (C), Heavy Commercial (HC), and Architectural Window (AW). All AAMA designated window types must meet performance requirements for air leakage, water penetration, and uniform structural loading.

Casement windows are side-hinged and project in or project out from the plane of the wall and provide up to 100% opening in the ventilator area. Project out casement windows could be subjected to strong buffeting by wind and require strong corner construction, hinge system, and hold-open limit devices. Casement window should not be used where they will project into hallways or walkways

Double-Hung and Single-Hung Hung windows operate vertically by offsetting the weight of the sash with a counterbalance mechanism. Hung windows offer the advantage of opening for ventilation without projecting beyond the wall plane, but are limited to less than 50% of the total window area.

Horizontal sliding window systems consist of a horizontally operable sash and a fixed, non-operational sash in one master frame. The simplest window system and most widely used in monumental projects. Like the hung window systems, maximum opening in the ventilator area is limited to less than 50% with no sash projecting beyond the wall plane.

Projected windows have one or more ventilators hinged or pivoted horizontally at the top or bottom of the window frame and project in or project out from the plane of the wall. Their design allows for the widest range of hardware options and, arranged properly, in the open position will provide ventilation even during light rain. Projected windows seal tight because of the ability to put the gasket abutting the complete frame under pressure in the locked position. This creates superior protection against water and air infiltration.

Fixed windows are non-operational windows with the sole purpose of providing a vision area and allowing daylight to enter. Fixed window systems come in a wide range of sizes, styles, and configurations.

Custom windows, in either fixed, operational, or a combination can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes and sizes and are used to accent a building feature or where other window systems are not applicable.
